Halloween Candy Sold in Indiana Recalled Over Allergy Risk

We're barely into September, but if you've walked into TJ Maxx, Marshalls, or HomeGoods lately, you know Halloween has been lurking in the aisles for a while now.

If you've already started stocking up on spooky treats, there's one you'll want to check.

Chrystala Temptations has recalled its Chocolately Eyeballs after discovering the Halloween candy contains milk that isn't declared on the packaging.

The recalled Halloween candy was distributed in Indiana and 12 other states, according to an announcement published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recalled Crystal Temptations Chocolatey Eyeballs were distributed through Marshalls, TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and Sierra Trading Post stores.

In addition to Indiana, the candy was distributed in Arizona, Texas, Virginia, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Nevada, California, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio, and Wyoming.

Five different packages are included in the recall:

• Style 54040-CHEY: 10-ounce plastic bag with a designed header card
• Style 54077-CHEY: 7-ounce acrylic box with a designed paper wrap
• Style 58008-CHEY: 10.5-pince round plastic jar
• Style 58089-CHEY: 16-ounce designer plastic pouch bag
• Style 54083-CHY: 11-ounce plastic bag tied with a tag

Why Are the Chocolatey Eyeballs Being Recalled?

According to the recall announcement, the Chocolatey Eyeballs contain whey, which is derived from milk, but the packaging failed to disclose the milk allergen.

For most people, that labeling error won't make the candy dangerous to eat. For someone with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk, however, consuming the product could cause a serious or potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

The company says the issue was discovered by a TJX analyst. An investigation determined that a temporary breakdown in the Crystal Temptations' production and packaging processes caused the labeling problem.

Thankfully, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled candy.

What Should You Do if You Bought the Recalled Candy?

Consumers who purchased the recalled Chocolately Eyeballs are being asked to destroy the product.

There's an important detail here if you want your money back, though: refunds are not available at the store where you purchased the candy.

Instead, consumers should contact Crystal Temptations directly and provide proof of purchase to receive a refund.
