Days on the lake will soon be replaced with early evenings indoors, life jackets and swimwear pushed to the backs of closest in exchange for flannel and knitted hats.

Before we become too melancholy, there is still time to soak up the sun before the seasonal closings begin. I've discovered some of the best places to rent a pontoon for Labor Day weekend celebrations on some of Kentucky's most scenic waterways.

Kentucky Dam Marina, Gilbersville

The marina has several options for those seeking to catch some last-minute sunshine, pontoons ranging in capacity from 10-14 guests for tailgates on the water! Also available to rent is their Bayliner 18 perfect for a day of fishing. If smaller crafts are more your speed they have kayaks and paddleboards as well.

Some of the Pontoons you will find are the Aloha 25 Tritoon, Aloha 26 Double Decker Pontoon, Princecraft 23 Tritoon,  and the Aloha 30 Double Decker Pontoon. Do you need to fuel up? The marina offers a diesel fueling station that is open from 8 am to 7 pm.

A little trivia, but did you know that Kentucky Lake is known as "The South's Great Lake"? Well, it sure is, Kentucky Lake is the largest man-made lake in the Eastern regions of the states. Its shores span two miles wide and neighbors the Tennessee River for over 180 miles.

Bob & Yo's Water Sports Rental, Scottsville

Bob & Yo's have been around for a while on Barren River Lake, and the variety of what they offer Barren River's summer-folk explains why people keep returning year to year. From a vacation home rental, peddle boats, paddle boards, wakeboards, water skis, and of course a pontoon. The Spicy Cayenne is a 29-foot pontoon that looks very much like its namesake and can seat 8-10 adults comfortably.

Wax Marina, Clarkson

Located on Nolan River Lake, Wax Marina has a wide array of watercraft to rent out for a day full of fun in the sun. With an impressive collection of pontoons docked, with crafts having the capacity to tow anywhere from 5 to 18 of your boating buddies. The 30-foot double slide pontoon is an option for those seeking a boat for a party crowd with a maximum capacity of 18 adults.

Set sail with 9-hour rentals with prices starting at pretty reasonable fares. The rentals do not include a fuel allowance but Wax Marina ensures that they will come equipped with a full tank at departure.

State Dock Marina, Jamestown

This marina has so much to offer Kentucky boaters, here you can rent a houseboat they have thirteen to choose from. They have several different pontoons to choose from as well to rent, pick one that will fit your needs the best. Whether you plan a day of fishing, sun tanning, or a bit of speed! This marina is so much like a little floating city!

Check out the upcoming event, Poker Run taking place September 6th and 7th! Poker Run will feature some of the fastest boats on the Cumberland, live music, prizes, and thousands of spectators!

Sulphur Creek Resort/ Dale Hollow Lake, Burkesville

Dale Hollow Lake is a popular summer destination in the SOKY (southern Kentucky region of the state, it does seem like everyone I know has visited Dale Hollow. Here is where to rent a pontoon to enjoy your day on the water!

Sulphur Creek Resort has a selection of pontoons you can rent for the day, from their deluxe pontoon, double deck, and decked boats. The resort also has three different houseboat rentals to choose from as well.

Do I need a boater license to rent a watercraft in Kentucky?

Generally speaking, the answer is no, you do not need a boater license to rent a pontoon in Kentucky or most other watercraft. Age though, is a factor so be mindful that people operating a boat need to be at least 18. Though ages 12-17 can operate with a valid boating certified card as long as there is someone 18 and older on the boat with them. Allowing anyone under the age of 12 to pilot a boat is prohibited. Some marinas require an adult age 21 and older with a driver's license to rent and operate their rental crafts.

Water Safety Tips

  • Life vests
  • Stay away from motor exhaust as this can cause Carbon Monoxide poisoning. (yes even when outdoors and in the open air) Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are headaches, dizziness, confusion, and others.
  • limit or avoid drinking alcohol, operating a boat while under the influence is illegal in all 50 states.
  • take a boating safety course
  • and be mindful of speed limits on the water
