Plans Announced for the 3rd Annual Erica Owen Domestic Violence Awareness 5K in Owensboro
It was six years ago that Erica Owen was murdered here in Owensboro, Kentucky. Her former boyfriend, Matthew Adams, was accused of that crime, eventually stood trial and was ultimately convicted. The cause of Erica's death was ruled as strangulation.
Much time has passed since. On May 21st, 2022, Adams was pronounced dead at Southeast State Correctional Complex where he was serving his sentence. Erica's story still resonates and her family remains committed to keeping her spirit alive in our community and making sure the tragedy reminds our community about the prevalence and dangers of domestic violence.
A key part of that mission is an annual walk/run event. Plans for the 3rd Annual Erica Owen Domestic Violence Awareness 5K have been announced. In fact, there are already over 100 runners and walkers signed up for it and you can join the mission as well.
This year's 5K is scheduled for Saturday, October 26th at Legion Park in the heart of Owensboro.
The event is an impactful way to remember and honor Erica and the way her friends and family loved her.
As Erica's mom, Lisa Greer says, "We just remember how full of life she was and how much she blessed all who knew her. She was my daughter and my best friend and the only thing that gets me through this is knowing I will see her again."
Proceeds from the 3rd Annual Domestic Violence Awareness 5K will benefit Oasis Women's Shelter, My Sister's Keeper, and the Erica Owen WKU Nursing Scholarship Fund.
