Only 44% of Americans say they’re satisfied with their personal lives, and in states like Kentucky, that number might be even lower. WalletHub just released its 2025 report on the Happiest States in America, using 30 different metrics to measure everything from mental health and income growth to unemployment and day-to-day productivity. The results aren’t exactly glowing for the Bluegrass State, which landed in the bottom tier of the list. While some states are making strides in overall well-being, Kentucky’s happiness score suggests there’s still a lot of work to do.

How the Study Was Done

Even in tough times, where you live can significantly impact your overall happiness. That’s the idea behind WalletHub’s latest report, which leans on decades of happiness research to explore how different factors, from emotional well-being to financial stability, shape our overall life satisfaction.

To get a clearer picture of happiness across the U.S., WalletHub analyzed all 50 states using 30 key metrics. These included everything from depression rates and income growth to how many adults feel productive in their daily lives and how high (or low) the unemployment rate is. The goal? To find out which states offer the healthiest mix of emotional, physical, social, and economic well-being.

Top of the List: America’s Happiest States

Hawaii claimed the top spot, with Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, and Connecticut rounding out the top five. These states scored high across the board, especially in emotional and physical health, strong social connections, and low levels of depression and suicide. For example, New Jersey has the lowest share of adult depression in the country and the fewest suicides per capita. Utah, just outside the top five, stands out with the highest volunteer rate and the lowest divorce rate in the nation.

Where Happiness Falls Behind

But further down the list, the picture shifts. In states like Kentucky, happiness doesn't seem to come quite as easily. While some states are thriving, others are still grappling with economic and mental health challenges that continue to weigh residents down, and Kentucky, unfortunately, is one of them. Coming in at 43rd out of 50, the Bluegrass State landed in the bottom tier of WalletHub’s 2025 Happiest States in America report.

The state’s lower ranking reflects struggles across several key areas: high rates of depression, weaker emotional and physical well-being, and slower economic growth compared to national averages. Kentucky ranked 42nd in emotional and physical well-being, 47th in work environment, and 30th in community and environment.

Neighboring states didn’t fare much better. Tennessee (45th), Arkansas (48th), and West Virginia (50th) also placed near the bottom, suggesting a trend that could be tied to access to healthcare, economic opportunity, and community resources.
