A Lifelong Love of Horses

If you know me, you know it's no secret that I love horses. I love them so much that I occasionally write for a couple of national equine magazines, and I serve as the Horse and Pony Superintendent for Warrick County 4-H. Plus, I have a couple of my own.

I actually inherited my horse from my daughter. He's slow, steady, and super safe. Perfect for a tenderfoot like me. My daughter prefers them a little spicier, so after she graduated from our old Tuck Tuck Bo Buck, she moved up to a thoroughbred with a big motor. But before I had Tuck, I spent plenty of time sitting on the sidelines watching the kids for hours.

I'd seize every opportunity to ride. I'd ride friends' horses. I'd ride horses at the barn where we board that needed some extra miles on them. I'd even book trail rides when we went on vacation. (Thunderhorse Outfitters in Austin, Texas, and Grand Lake, Colorado, is so excellent that we're actually visiting Colorado this summer just to go on his Rocky Mountain trail ride.)

The Dream of a Dude Ranch Vacation

I've also always wanted to book a dude ranch vacation. Growing up, I loved the City Slickers movies. If you've never had the pleasure of watching Billy Crystal and his NYC buddies drive a herd across the open plains, I highly suggest you watch both of them.

But dude ranch vacations can get really expensive, and the ones I've found are usually out west. Between airfare and the cost of the vacation, it can seem really out of reach for families.

A Dude Ranch Not Too Far From the Tri-State

Recently, though, I found a dude ranch a little closer to home. It's located in Dunlap, Tennessee, about four hours from the tri-state. The Tennessee Dude and Guest Ranch has a lot going on. Even if you aren't into horses, there's something for everyone.

The Tennessee Dude and Guest Ranch Story

The Tennessee Dude & Guest Ranch was founded in the summer of 2000 when Navy veteran Chris Young and his wife Tammy moved to the Sequatchie Valley to raise their two sons with a love for faith, hard work, horses, and agriculture.

Built on Biblical principles and a passion for ministry, the ranch uses horses as a way to share God's word and help people grow closer to their faith. Today, the Young family continues that mission while welcoming guests and sharing ranch life with their growing family.

What Happens During a Dude Ranch Stay

According to the website, when you arrive at the ranch, you receive your very own working ranch horse that will accompany you during your stay. During your time at the ranch, the horse becomes your responsibility. You feed, water, and yes, muck stalls.

You'll get a tour of the facilities, and each day you'll trail ride to a beautiful destination through the scenic Sequatchie Valley. I have ridden in this area, and it's absolutely breathtaking. One of the trail rides they offer is to the river where they offer an optional Bible study that focuses on... you guessed it... horses! It's not required but if it aligns with your reigious beliefs, it's a really amazing way to integrate nature into your spiritual life.

They told me that you stay busy throughout the entire day when you aren't trail riding. Every morning, you have farm chores like milking cows and gathering eggs. At night, they have activities like roping classes, games, movie nights, a barn dance, and optional Bible studies.

The ranch also offers authentic chuck wagon breakfasts, saddlebag lunches, and dinners so you can live just like the cowboys did on the trail during cattle drives. And the best part? Their meals are totally farm-to-table. They feed the grass-fed beef they raise at the ranch. They use the vegetables they've grown. They roll their own oats and mill their own wheat. It's all authentic.

And if you are wondering what the accommodations are like, well, it's an upgrade from sleeping on the ground in the desert. Stay in their beautiful cowboy cabin or a Wrangler Suite and be sure to check out the porch that overlooks the Sequatchie Valley.

Kids over nine are allowed to accompany adults on the trail rides but they also offer a Buckaroo camp experience where kids can stay back and ride ponies and be kids on a farm.

Farm Experiences Even If You Don't Ride Horses

Now, if riding horses isn't your thing, that's okay. They also offer a farm experience.

The website says you'll learn to milk a cow, feed chickens and collect eggs, grind wheat and roll oats, and even take a farm-to-table cooking class. They also offer free pony rides, a horsemanship class, and a complimentary marshmallow roast.

The farm experience wraps up at about 10 or 11 each morning and guests are free to hike, explore the town, or just relax.

This experience includes breakfast, but not lunch or dinner. They mention a little restaurant down the road with a free petting zoo for customers. You can also add the chuck wagon dinner for an additional fee. If it sounds fun but you can't devote an entire week to dude ranch life, they also offer day experiences and pony parties.

Agricultural Education Programs at the Ranch

Outside of the farm and dude ranch experiences, the ranch stays busy with several other programs, including the American Ranching Academy F.A.R.M. Business Degree.

It's a unique college program offered through the Sequatchie Valley International Program of Agriculture for students 18 years and older. It combines hands-on experiential education with classroom academics and focuses on the knowledge and skills needed for careers in agriculture.

They also offer the SVIPA Pre-Vet National Horse Camp for students ages 8 to 15. Kids learn how to give shots, check for parasites, pull blood, administer medications, treat and prevent leg injuries, and much more.

A Ranch Built on Faith and Ministry

The website explains that the ranch is a Farming Agritourism Ranching Ministry. The family that runs it offers Bible study classes throughout your stay and tailors the studies to horses and farm life.

They also host Cowboy Church, an evening event held every second Saturday of the month from April through November. Kids enjoy a pony ride along with chuck wagon chow before the Cowboy Church program begins, which includes live music, horses, and a message.

Supporting the Honduras Horsemanship Mission Project

And if you didn't think they were busy enough, the ranch also works in connection with the Honduras Horsemanship Mission Project.

This program uses horses and agriculture to share God's word with children, teens, and adults in Central America. Based at Orphanage Emmanuel in Honduras, the program teaches horsemanship, agriculture, and Bible lessons to about 70 children each week while helping support an orphanage that serves more than 300 kids.

Founded in 2004 by SVIPA students, the mission continues today with staff and F.A.R.M. Degree students traveling to Honduras to teach, work with animals, and share ministry through horsemanship and agricultural education.

A Unique Tennessee Getaway, The Smoky Mountain Pirate Ship

Located on Douglas Lake in Tennessee, sits a rather unconventional houseboat. What makes this houseboat unconventional is it's been modeled to look like a pirate ship, complete with masts, skeletons, portholes, and more! If you're wanting a Smoky Mountain getaway like no other, this is certainly a good option. See the full VRBO listing, here.
